Don’t Live In Black And White! Purify Air In Home And Office

There are a few basic things that our bodies just can't live without. Without food, drink and shelter to keep us warm and safe none of us would last longer than a few days. We are fully aware of these basic needs and so we work our butts off to keep ourselves alive. But there is a physical need that we don't often think about because we get it for free. It is pure air. Most of us don't appreciate it even though without it we couldn't live longer than a few minutes.

Obviously we do have enough air to stay alive, but for some of us staying alive is not an ultimate goal. Those of us who wish to live a long and healthy life should be concerned about the quality of the air we breathe.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency Americans spend about 90 percent of their time indoors. At the same time the quality of the indoor air is two to five times more polluted than the air outside our homes and apartments. What can we do to make sure we and our children breathe clean air?

There are two simple strategies that keep the pollutants away from our lungs:

*First of all, keep the things that cause the problems away from your home.

Obviously this includes cigarette smoke. Have you ever wondered why those old movies where everybody is constantly smoking inside are black and white? Well, perhaps the kind of film used has something to do with it but I can't help but thinking that even if they did use the Technicolor process back then, gray and black would be the most visible colors.

Carbon monoxide and Radon gas should also be kept away. Install detectors and don't run your car or lawnmower in the garage. Make sure your fuel-burning appliances are working properly and don't leak.

Avoid paints that emit harmful chemicals (some for months after they stop smelling). Use paints that are “low-VOC” or even better “no-VOC”. VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compounds and are toxic.

Too much moisture indoors is also potentially dangerous to our health. Mold and dampness can cause asthma. Make sure your roof is not leaking and your basement doesn't let unwanted moisture in the house.

*The second strategy is taking the pollutants out of our indoors.

Ventilate your apartment or house. Open your windows as often as you can to let the fresh air push the used up and harmful air out. Also make sure you have an effective exhaust system.

Purify your air with dehumidifiers and use air conditioning when needed. Mark the days on you calendar or planner when your dehumidifiers and air conditioning will be cleaned. They need to be cleansed regularly.

Finally, purify air with an air purifier. They remove dust and pollen from your air and reduce the number of harmful dust mites.

It's time to give clean air the deserved credit and give it at least as much attention as we do to other things that keep our bodies warm and healthy.
